In my craft or sullen art practiced in the silence of the night

when only the moon rages

and lovers lie in bed

with all their sorrows in the arms,

I labored in a light that sings

not for ambition or bread

or struts and charm

sell ivory on the stage, but the town

salary

their innermost heart.

not for the superb s'apparta

that the raging moon I write on these pages

foam

or for the towering dead with their

their nightingales and psalms, but

lovers,

arms around the anxieties of the ages,
who pay no praise or wages

and do not care about my craft or art
